Endometriosis is a chronic, oestrogen-dependent, benign disease whereby tissue that resembles the uterus lining grows outside the uterus. It most commonly grows in the pelvis, ovaries, and fallopian tubes and in severe cases can spread behind the reproductive system. It causes a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in the formation of scar tissue within the pelvis and other parts of the body.
Symptoms include pelvic pain, particularly during a menstrual period and during intercourse, heavy periods, pain during bowel and urination, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, fatigue and infertility.
Causes - Endometriosis is known to be dependent on oestrogen, which facilitates inflammation, growth and pain associated with the disease. However, it is complex, since the absence of oestrogen does not always preclude the presence of endometriosis. Several other factors are thought to promote the development, growth and maintenance of endometriosis lesions. These include altered or impaired immunity, complex hormonal influences, genetics and potentially, environmental contaminants.
Lifestyle choices that create stress include the inability to say no, poor boundaries, poor time management, poor sleeping habits and a 24/7 overloaded week. Chronic stress perpetuates the making of an acid environment that leads to inflammation and hormone imbalance and a wearing down of the immune system.
Medical treatments include: painkillers, hormone medicines, contraceptives and surgery to cut away areas of endometriosis tissue.
Natural treatments include:
